RETURN OF THE PICKLED PAINTERS

The Pickled Painters are a collective of 12 women who embrace adventure, creativity, and camaraderie. First exhibiting at the gallery in 2023, they return in 2025 with new work born from two years of shared exploration. Their painting excursions, often involving tents, canoes, wine, and wide-eyed curiosity, have taken them deeper into the backwoods of Algonquin, through the winding waterways of the Kawarthas, and beyond. Each journey has deepened their connection to the land, to each other, and their shared passion for Canadian landscape painting.

In this Canadian context, early 20th-century artists such as Tom Thomson, Lawren Harris, and Emily Carr ventured into forests, lakes, and mountains to express a powerful national identity through landscape. Though their interpretations were often idealized, the legacy of this immersive, wilderness-based practice lives on today.

Every member of the collective brings a unique perspective and strength—whether logistical, artistic, or humorous—to support the creative process. Their subject matter continues to draw from Canada's iconic visual tropes: glimmering waterlines, dense forests, rocky escarpments, and luminous skies. Together, they continue to forge a vibrant, rural path—one painted in wine, wind, and wonder.

The Pickled Painters are affiliated with numerous regional and national arts organizations, including the East Central Ontario Art Association, Kawartha Lakes Arts Council, Women’s Art Association, Society of Canadian Artists, Ontario Society of Artists, and Scugog Council for the Arts. Members Marissa Sweet, Joanne Barker, Kate Segriff, and Rhonda Laursen gained national recognition through their participation in Season 2 of Landscape Artist of the Year Canada on CBC
